NC Worst State for Teachers, and Mark Walker Would Only Make it Worse

Press Release

Date: Oct. 1, 2014
Issues: K-12 Education

The News and Record recently reported on a new study by WalletHub where North Carolina ranked as the worst state in the country for teachers. The results of this study are embarrassing for the state of North Carolina and show that there is much work to be done.

The study of all 50 states and the District of Columbia had North Carolina ranked dead last. North Carolina was 48th in per pupil public school funding, and 47th in teacher median annual salary.

Mark Walker is already aiming at the Department of Education, promising large cuts when we can least afford it. Instead of prioritizing education, and improving conditions for students and teachers, Walker wants to cut the Department of Education, which would only make things worse.

Laura Fjeld said, "As the daughter of two public school teachers, I will fight for strategic investments in education at all levels. This study showing North Carolina as the worst state for teachers needs to serve as a wake up call. Our kids fail when we don't support our teachers. We want to be a magnet for good teachers to come and work in North Carolina. Mark Walker's plan to gut education even further would be devastating for our students and our region."
